3 Lessons I Learned from Volunteering with JEP
By: Kelsey Cheng ‘25
USC’s Joint Educational Project (JEP) is one of the oldest and largest service-learning programs in the United States. As a volunteer, Trojans can tutor local students, teach yoga, instruct lessons, and more. This fall, I volunteered as a team member for the Peace Project, a mini-course taught at local elementary schools about peacemaking. Here are some of the lessons that I learned from my first time teaching.

The March Against Sexual Assault at USC
By: Nancy Aguilar ‘22
Last week, the University of Southern California released a crime alert email reporting a sexual assault case in the Sigma Nu Fraternity house. This was found to be correlated to previous reports of drugs being placed into drinks and an ongoing investigation has since been taking place regarding what the email called ‘drug-facilitated sexual assault.’ The Sigma Nu fraternity has been suspended and is unable to host any events; the email also mentions that a member of Sigma Nu has already been detained and academically suspended.
The Fresh Prince and I
By: Justin Negash ‘22
It’s 2008, and I’m eating my injera with chickpeas as fast as I can; scarfing down my dinner so that I’m seated and ready for 7:00. I’m ahead of schedule as the medley of infomercials and local plumbing advertisements bombard my television screen. I needed this; after a long day at school, I yearned to enter the world of Bel-Air and its certified ruler: the Fresh Prince. I’m counting the seconds until 7:00 hits as my family finally gets seated on the living room couch (ableit to much less enthusiasm than myself). 7:00 hits, and the fruits of my labor finally get realized. Finally, the Prince has arrived.

GAK House - Housing for Low-Income Students
By: Camila Grases ‘21
One of the biggest struggles for college students is finding affordable housing near campus, especially if you live in a city like Los Angeles. The area around USC has turned into a place where companies can invest and charge thousands of dollars in rent to college students who are already struggling to get by. In a community like this, it’s wonderful to have found the GAK house, where rent is $375 a month and whose mission statement is “financial and personal support, diversity of culture and ideas, opportunities for leadership, access to our alumni network and all that is best in the Trojan spirit.”
Why All Asian-American Students Should Consider Joining CIRCLE
By: Antonia Le ‘22
I might be an outlier when I say this, but there is nothing that I hate more than club recruitment season. It’s hard enough handling classes and homework, but trying to fill out a million applications and schedule a dozen interviews? Forget it. They say it’s supposed to get easier over time, but if it does, I haven’t hit that point yet. I won’t lie. There are times where I’ve applied to a club/program just to apply to something and then regretted it. However, there are also clubs and programs that I will be thankful for every day, and CIRCLE is one of them. If you identify as an Asian or Pacific Islander, I suggest you read on and learn all about the amazing CIRCLE program.
