10 Ways You Know You’re A College Student Trying to Save Money
By Kelly Kinas ‘16
I know the stereotype of USC is the University of Spoiled Children and we all know some people like that. But the majority of us are usually trying to save money and be able to do cool things at the same time. Trust me, I recognize my life is privileged but my savings account is so low, I’m working on trying to spend as little money as possible most of the time.
How many of these have you done or are currently doing?
1. Ordering a pizza Friday night and making it last for your meals throughout the weekend.
Delicious. No problems here.
2. Only showering when necessary to save on shampoo and body wash.
Sidenote, you still need to shower. Just be frugal with the wash, rinse, repeat.
3. Making Pinterest boards for all the outfits you would wear if you had the money to be fashionable.
4. Check RateMyProfessor to see if you ACTUALLY need to buy the textbook for that class.
5. Living solely off wifi by running from shelter to shelter so that your data usage isn’t through the roof
Actually wifi doesn’t even help that much around USC. USC Wireless is the bane of most of our existences. You’re on your own there really.
6. Looking up workouts on your computer because you can’t pay for SoulCycle
If you’re an USC student, you can get a class pass for the Lyon Center decently cheap! It’s $85 a semester BUT you get unlimited classes that are taught by students! There’s spin, yoga, zumba, belly-dancing, kick-boxing, and much more. It might seem like a lot right now but that’s like 3 SoulCycle classes and it’s for the entire semester.
7. Every event your school puts on, whether networking or anything else, you’re there because of free food.
PLUS School events are kinda chill. Meet new people, networking is actually pretty fun if you like small talk, and there’s free food. Keep an eye for other events and clubs that have interest events on Facebook. Learn more about the community while also saving money!
8. Going home some weekends just to eat out of your parent’s fridge.
9. Exploring the metro because you don’t want to pay for gas.
Actually, not a bad thing. You can get to Santa Monica now using the Metro Expo Line. It takes about 45 minutes but it’s only $1.75 each way if you already have a metro card. Explore EVERYWHERE.
10. AND YET, still paying for Netflix and Spotify. Dat Millennial Mindset.
You guys got this. Saving money is important but how many of these do you do? If you have others that I left out, comment on the Facebook post with them!
Fight on!
