By: Samantha Romero ‘16

Looking for something to do during spring break? Look no further, here is a curated list of hikes to check off your list.

1.Runyon Canyon

With 160 acres of natural beauty, Runyon Canyon is a popular hiking destination. This hike is ideal for an early morning or evening hike with friends and family. The 2.5 mile loop is filled with scenic views of Los Angeles. It’s also dog-friendly so feel free to bring your furry friend along!

2.Griffith Park Trails

With multiple trails to choose from be sure to choose one before your trip. One of my favorites is the Old L.A. Zoo trail. The hike is moderate yet comfortable for a new hiker. Plus, you get a bit of sight-seeing as you pass through the abandoned old L.A. Zoo. It’s the perfect photo opportunity for the Instagram lover in you.

3.Eaton Canyon

Perhaps one of my favorite hikes not only because the lush shade from the towering trees but at the end of trail you are rewarded with a charming view of a mini-waterfall. It’s the perfect laid back hike to invite friends along or to simply venture outdoors.

4.Malibu Creek State Park

Located in the Santa Monica mountains, Malibu Creek Trails are filled with charming views of the creek throughout. Plus there are also opportunities for fishing, bird watching and horseback riding.

5.Topanga Canyon State Park

Looking for a quick hit? Then try the Santa Ynez trail at Tonnage Canyone State Park. With a 2-mile roundtrip trail, it’s perfect for a quick stroll, plus if you’re lucky you’ll see the flowing Santa Ynez falls.

6.Vasquez Rocks

If you’re visiting Vasquez rocks for the firs time then let me warn you, it feels like you are teleporting to the scene of Lion King, where Mufasa raises baby Simba as he introduces him to the world. Yes, it feels and looks exactly like that.

7.Mt.Rubidoux

There are multiple trails that lead to the same path spice your trail of choice based on what you’re in the mood for. At the top there are several sites to explore, the most popular being the large cross.

8.Beverly Whittier Trail

If you’re looking to experience a different part of LA, then I recommend this neighborhood trail. It’s family friendly and great for beginners. At the top of the hill you will find a pleasing view of DTLA in the distance.

When you’re finished with your hike grab a fresh juice of coffee in the friendly Uptown Whittier.

9.Escondido Falls

With a roundtrip of only 3.8 miles, Escondido Falls is both hiker and biker friendly. The trails boasts of some of the finest waterfalls so I’d be sure to check it out.

10.Rancho Cucamonga Peak

Perhaps one of the more intense hikes that I’ve done.In fact, it consisted of backpacking for two days to finish the trail, mind you that it was snowing and raining at the time. I definitely recommending this hike in the warmer seasons.

Hiking Tips

Water

Make sure to bring along a water bottle so that you can avoid dehydration.

Snacks

Some hikes are more intense than others but most importantly you want to avoid feeling light headed or dizzy so bring a snack along to power through your hike.

Poisonous Plants

Familiarize yourself with poisonous plants so you can avoid these at all costs. Just to be safe I would recommend wearing long sweats or leggings to at least have some sort of protection in case you brush up against a poisonous plant.

Have a Map

It can be easy to get lost in the hundred of acres of these beautiful parks so be sure to have a map to take along with you in case you get lost.

Pepper Spray or Walking Stick

If you’re going alone be sure to take some sort of protection because remember you’re hiking in the home of animals like snakes  and mountain lions.

Take a Friend

Hiking with company is always a nice way to spend quality time with your friends and family. So be sure to invite your friends on your outdoor adventure and most importantly, ENJOY!
