Want to take a break from studying for exams or simply enjoy a night out with friends? Well, look no further. Here is a curated list of music venues to discover good music in Los Angeles.

1.Bardot at Avalon

Located minutes outside of downtown, the Bardot is a popular music destination. Every Monday night, KCRW hosts an event called “School Night,”  a music spectacle that brings new and upcoming musicians to the stage. On certain occasions, they bring special guests.

Last month I had the opportunity to attend Miguel’s performance at the Bardot. Among the crowded room of attendees was Chance the Rapper and actress Chloe Grace Moretz.

Be sure to arrive early to avoid waiting in lines. Entrance is free with RSVP.

2.Resident

If you haven’t heard of the Resident yet, then you soon will because it’s the new music venue in town. It has something for everyone to enjoy in your group of friends. From the beer gardens, to a DJ lounge to an intimate stage for artists and musicians. If you’re looking for a laid back time and new music, then this is the place to go.

Tickets usually range between $5-15, it’s typically best to purchase them online in advance to ensure entry. Plus, if you’re looking for a bite to eat try Urth Cafe, found right across the street from Resident.

3.The Smell

Pure energy and passion for music fills this volunteer-run venue. For several years this creative space has dedicated itself to the D.I.Y. practice. They are a not-for-profit venue open to all ages, gifting the pleasure of good times and good music. Their events typically range around $5.

4.Pehrspace

I was first introduced to Pehrspace by a good friend at USC. It’s a hidden gem in Echo Park filled with creatives and musicians. They combine art and music to introduce new sounds.

If you’re in the mood for visual art, stay tuned on their event calendar for art presentations and galleries.

They will be celebrating their 10th anniversary on March 19 so be sure to check it out!

5.Hotel Figueroa

This Moroccan-inspired Hotel turns into a music extravaganza at night. Enjoy their music sessions by the pool. It’s a different pace of atmosphere when you’re surrounded by historic architecture built in the 1920’s. It’s definitely worth visiting and enjoying fine music by the pool. Just a few months ago the USC band Gypsum played an awesome set at this very location.

It’s also walking distance from the Staples Center and surrounding restaurants in DTLA.

6.The HiHat

Located in Highland Park, The Hi Hat hosts a variety of events in addition to music from open mic comedy to magazine events. Last week I attended an EP release party. It was filled with a photobooth, cupcakes, face painting, and custom designed jewelry pop-up.

Plus, there are pool tables if you want to play a game or two with friends. However, my personal favorite is their tasty menu ranging from: crispy potato tacos to hot chicken tenders.

7.The Echo

Perhaps, one of the more popular venues in LA is The Echo. They are jam packed with events every single night. I’ve even seen some of my friends perform at this very space. One of their most popular events is “Taking Back Tuesday: Emo Night LA.” I currently have my eye on the David Bowie Tribute show on Feb.29.

8.The Regent

My favorite thing about this venue is it’s prime location in the heart of DTLA. It’s the ideal space to catch a show and a night in the town. It’s also located next to The Love Song Bar, one of my favorite places to enjoy Italian-style pizza made fresh from the oven.
