About Grace

By Grace Carballo ‘17

My name is Grace and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of Trojans 360 because I love talking about this amazing school and sharing my thoughts on life in general to anyone and everyone who will listen.

I came to USC as an Undecided major, which led me to spend many hours scrolling through the long list of choices. Quiz me, I dare you. I narrowed my choices to the broadest possible option, Global Studies, a new major in the Anthropology Department. Last time I checked, there were eight of us declared, but it is growing exponentially.  I am also studying Spanish, as either a major or minor depending on how study abroad pans out, and am working on minors in Screenwriting through the School of Cinematic Arts and Nonprofits, Philanthropy, and Volunteerism through the Price School of Public Policy.

I feel like this covers all my bases career-wise, but sometimes I long for a simpler time when I could proudly proclaim “Undecided” when asked about my major and give vague responses to any and all follow-up questions until the asker exploded from concern about my uncertain future. Anyone who tells you they have their entire future figured out is probably lying. Or a psychic.

Besides the school part of my education, I have learned a whole lot about all aspects of life from the groups I’ve joined and people I’ve met on campus.

I’m a member of Tridelt and love a good game day as much as the next Trojan. I’m one of the stingiest people I know and couldn’t justify the purchase of a Song Girl skirt so I rocked the boxers look, borrowed from my friend, Ali, most games this fall.

I can’t find any solo shots of myself, which leads me to believe I’m not the narcissist I thought I was, though the length of this post may prove otherwise. For your viewing convenience, and also possibly a subconscious effort to show my good side, I am on the far right of all of these photos.

I am the Outreach Director for USC WYSE, which stands for Women and Youth Supporting Each Other. We teach essentially a feminist health class at local middle schools and cover healthy relationships, body image, conflict resolution, and a lot of knowledge 8th-grade Grace could have really used. We often get confused with WISE, the Science and Engineering group, but I promise you I am neither interested or qualified to participate in this organization.

I love exploring LA, but I really adore getting out of the city and into nature. I am a new Trip Lead for Peaks and Professors, which I will definitely write more about in future posts. This photo is from a beautiful hike in the Malibu Mountains with Professor Harris, who is quite the chiller himself.

I’ve been insanely blessed to get to know all the great people in these organizations, as well as Sack of Troy and Best Buddies, and I totally understand why adults keep telling me this is the prime of my life.

I plan to write about USC’s finest people, professors, and courses because I have been having tremendous luck in encountering all of the above (S/O to my guardian angel). I will share advice, too, because I have had more than enough “learning experiences” to go around and why make the same mistakes when you can just read about them and laugh at my expense? Or just laugh with me, because I have a sick sense of humor.

Here is a fun fact I will leave you with that may undermine my credibility, but in the spirit of full disclosure: I miss tremendously EVK’s brussel sprouts. Please contact me if you are willing to guest swipe me in when they are served.
