Durag Day at USC
By: Joy Ofodu ‘18
Inspired by similar Durag Day events at colleges like Morehouse and UT Austin, student members of USC’s Black Student Assembly & friends set a new tradition in Troy: the first day in which undergraduate students allied to comfortably and proudly debut their nighttime stylings under the LA sun.

Appropriately scheduled for the first day of Black History Month, #USCDuragDay set Trojan Timelines ablaze with fierce color, cloth and community spirit. In the fashion of most spontaneous ‘Black SC’ events, there was plenty of dancing to be had.

Most chose to rock traditional durags with silk and satin ties.
Others chose patterned scarves to say, “Midterms are coming up so I’m protecting my hair; don’t try it.”
Finally, some opted for the highly-popular bonnet to keep afro curls and breakage under control.
It isn’t often that protective styling is seen in full effect on Trousdale, making Thursday’s events particularly meaningful for the hardworking, fashion-forward community of students.
USC organizations will continue to host Black History Month events throughout February, most of which are open to all students, faculty & guests!
