Gourmet Sorbets, Green Juices and Crystals from Bali at USC

By Samantha Romero ‘16

It’s Wednesday, the middle of the week and one day closer to the weekend, but most importantly it’s farmer’s market day at McCarthy Quad.

At first glance it can be overwhelming with the various options from food trucks, locally grown fruit and vegetables to boutique jewelry stands. As a result, I’ve decided to curate a list of my personal favorites for this week.

The first stand I visited was the Los Angeles based jewelry company Wilma and Ethel. Founded by Kesha Hicks, the line carries bohemian necklaces, rings and bracelets. My favorite items were the infinity copper rings and the minimal 14K gold-plated rings.

Next, I stopped to admire the shimmering array of crystals in Kate Tevanbaugh’s Bali Buddha jewelry collection. Tevenbaugh travels twice a year to have the luminous crystals gold-plated and macramed into fine bracelets and necklaces. I admit it was a tough decision deciding which one of these unique pieces to purchase but nonetheless one of my favorite finds this week.

After feeling the heat from a sunny Wednesday afternoon I decided to pick up a sorbet from AB Sorbets and Gelati Celesti. The stand is known for their gourmet sorbets in a fruit shell. My personal favorite is the tart red and yellow Pommango.

Last but not least I stopped by the Honey Queen stand to pick up a fresh juice for the metro ride to Koreatown. I particularly enjoy the Green Island blend along with a dash of chia seeds to provide a bit of texture.

So there you have it, a few of my favorite farmers market picks of the week. Now I’d like to know what you enjoy most about the farmers market.
