How to stay updated on all things USC

by Ayman Siraj ‘18

USC is a large school with over 44,000 students on campus. How does one keep up to date on what is happening on campus and off campus while trying to study all day and keep up with their Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram feeds? We have got a list for you:

The Daily Trojan – The DT is USC’s student run newspaper. All content is produced by students. The newspaper generally covers big events happening on campus and occasionally Los Angeles. They also have sections for sports, lifestyle and opinions. DT also runs special issues pertaining to housing, careers and sports once a year.

USC News – USC News always tends to publish the most up to date stuff on USC research, happenings, awards and anything news worthy. It is a great way of knowing what fellow Trojans are up to, especially the ones that go above and beyond to build success or contribute to their communities.

USC Annenberg Media – Annenberg Media describes itself as “a mobile-social news network that keeps you current on the topics young adults and USC students care about.”

Previously known as Neon Tommy and Annenberg TV News, the two merged to form Annenberg Media. We all know USC Annenberg is the No.1 Journalism & Communications school in the country and hence the quality of Annenberg Media’s content is always up to standard and refreshing. I have seen them do Facebook Live interviews, Snapchat protests in LA and make 360 VR photos of the inauguration!

The Sack of Troy – The Sack of Troy describes itself as “the second best parody news publication”. The content they put out is downright funny. It brings out everything you ever thought about USC that didn’t make sense or you laughed about in a delightful manner!

The Tab USC – “The Tab is an online news network which publishes original stories by young journalists from the top universities in the US and UK.”

I am not the biggest fan of the Tab. I would describe it as “sensationalist” as they go overboard on many things they report. But nonetheless I constantly find myself clicking on their articles. Usually they are the fastest to break news of something that official USC publications would hesitate to publish.

USC El Rodeo – I remember back in the school days; the Yearbook was what got everyone excited. We would open it up in a group and laugh at each other’s portrait and diligently scan for photos of the friend group. In college, I have not seen many people talk about the Yearbook but it does exist! You can coup yourself a copy on the linked website.

Illumin Magazine – “Illumin is an online magazine dedicated to exploring the science and technology behind the things we encounter every day. Produced and published by the Engineering Writing Program at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Illumin features the work of talented USC undergraduate engineers.”

Having gone through USC’s engineering writing program and read many Illumin articles, I can say for sure that the content on this website is well worth a read and interesting. It is also an interesting lens into issues and engineering innovations our generation seem to care about or are interested in more.

Viterbi Conversations in Ethics – VCE was recently launched and the newest addition to Viterbi’s plethora of publishing. “Viterbi Conversations in Ethics is an educational forum for reasoned, informed, and relevant discussion of engineering ethics. Written, edited, and published by USC Viterbi School of Engineering students.”

Ethics although emphasized in many Engineering Code of Conducts is often not taught as a separate class at most US universities and the same applies to USC. I wish it was as I have come to realize how important ethical decisions are and how difficult it is to reconcile ethics with business values for many engineers going on to work in industry. Reading VCE will open your mind up to new questions about the way many engineering related issues are and question the status quo.

USC Trojan Family Magazine – I came across TFM while researching for this article. The content on the website looks to be very well written and generally focuses on the success stories of USC faculty, alumni and students. Always a great idea to keep up to date with what the Trojan family is up to.

And of course,

Trojans 360 – T360 is USC’s very own student run blog. We produce content for you, the students at USC. Covering everything from campus events to suggestions on making your USC experience worthwhile and better.

I hope this list is helpful to you Trojans out their. Keep in mind this list is not exhaustive. A simple internet search of “[usc school name] [magazine]” will take you to magazines published by the corresponding school - I know Viterbi, Dornsife, Annenberg and SCA all have their own publications as well. Additionally there are many more publications that I probably do not know of. I even came across a new one just as I searched for more - Adsum - USC’S Student-Run Literary Magazine. Please comment below if there is any publication I missed that you would suggest others to read.
