The Best of USC Radio Shows and Podcasts

By Ellice Ellis ‘20

Podcasts and radio media are making a comeback and USC students are ahead of the curve. You can find students on campus not only producing their own content; but playing a wide variety of music, discussing the latest pop-culture gossip, or interviewing interesting people around campus.

Finding the right podcast or radio show to get into can be a daunting task, especially if you don’t have hours of time to spare or the patience to sit through a crappy show. So what is the solution? Read the list below and get acquainted with following shows.  I’m sure they will have you hooked instantly.

B.E.A.M Podcast

B.E.A.M stands for Black Excellence and More and the podcast is just that. Keeping their listeners ‘woke’ and informed, the podcast serves as an outlet for Black students at USC to discuss current events, social issues and other aspects of Black popular culture.  Last week B.E.A.M discussed the 2017 Grammys, the performances, the snubs and whether or not the Grammy institute is biased or outdated.

This week B.E.A.M will not only recap last weekend’s Oscars but highlight figures in the Black community as they do every week. So if you’re a fan of Moonlight, Viola Davis, or award shows in general, then tune in this Wednesday at 8:00 pm at kxsc.org/listen or check out their Soundcloud at www.soundcloud.com/theblackvoices

Match Volume

We all know that the Annenberg Media center is home to great and creative student journalists. If you enjoy listening to interesting interviews of interesting people, then you should definitely check out Match Volume. New episodes are released every other Friday at 11 a.m. here at http://www.uscannenbergmedia.com/category/match-volume/ . One of my favorite shows this semester featured New Editor Meghan Coyle speaking to Chicago’s Damon Williams and Daniel Kisslinger of the podcast AirGo. Yes it’s a podcast inside a podcast ! So if you’re a podcast lover like me, this one is for you. Listen here: http://www.uscannenbergmedia.com/2017/02/09/match-volume-airgo/

Wavelength on KXSC

There are so many great KXSC radio shows that you can tune into, depending on your taste in music.  My personal favorite is The Wavelength. Wavelength is hosted by freshman DJ Ugonnaya (Gogo) Chilaka ( @ovo_gogo on Twitter) who describes her show as “good vibrations of music and high frequencies of opinionated college students.” In weeks past Gogo has discussed love, self love/self care, and general college life. This week she will discuss new music that’s come out in 2017. I’m guessing the highly anticipated release of SZA’s sophomore album will probably be discussed. So if you’re a SZA fan, ready for some new music or need something to relax your mind while studying you should surely tune in Fridays 12 p.m to 1 a.m.
