What No One Tells You About College: The Yes Mindset

by Emma Wong

Starting college can feel like stepping into an entirely new world, full of opportunities, challenges, and unknowns. When I first arrived at USC, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I quickly realized that the key to making the most of my experience was learning to say yes.

At first, saying yes felt intimidating. It meant stepping out of my comfort zone and trying things I had never done before. One of my first "yes" moments was studying abroad in London during my freshman year. Moving to a new country at 18 was daunting, but that experience completely changed my perspective. I immersed myself in a new culture, traveled across Europe, and gained independence in ways I never imagined. That one decision opened doors to a mindset of exploration and adventure.

Since then, I’ve continued to challenge myself by embracing new experiences. Saying yes to leadership opportunities, like becoming the Director of Public Relations for my sorority, has given me confidence in my abilities and taught me the importance of effective communication. Taking on internships and balancing a busy schedule has helped me grow professionally, pushing me to develop time management skills and build connections that will shape my future career in PR and marketing.

Saying yes has also impacted my social life in unexpected ways. Whether it was joining a new workout class, trying a different restaurant in LA, or attending events outside of my usual circles, each new experience has helped me form meaningful friendships and create unforgettable memories. By stepping outside my routine, I’ve built a network of people who inspire and support me.

Of course, learning to say yes doesn’t mean agreeing to everything. It’s about recognizing opportunities for growth and being open to possibilities while setting healthy boundaries. College is a time for exploration, and taking chances has made my journey far richer than I could have imagined.

Looking back, I can see how each "yes" has shaped who I am today. From studying abroad to career-building experiences and personal growth, embracing the unknown has made my college life more exciting, fulfilling, and full of stories worth sharing. If there’s one piece of advice I’d offer to incoming students, it’s this: say yes to the things that scare you a little, and you never know where or who they might lead you to.
