What Your Summer Housing Says About You
By Kelly Kinas ‘16
Now that graduation as passed and the summer months are upon us, a majority of USC’s population is scattered across the country. Whether you’re back home or chilling in student housing over the summer or even in a brand new city for an internship, THIS is what your summer housing and living situation says about you (from a random USC student’s opinion)!!
NON-USC:
Home:
you’re either a freshman or you wanted to get an internship close to home. If it’s the first, you’re probably super excited to hang out with your high school friends again and post an Instagram with a “Damn Daniel” description (Back at it again!!!!!) If you’re the latter, you probably don’t even talk to your high school friends that much anymore and you’re living at home probably just to save money. You’re gonna want to be independent buy you also might still have a curfew. Nothing is wrong about living at home during the summer, especially if it’s a money issue. Just be prepared that summer is a great time to test out living on your own and living in different cities before you’re forced to after graduation.
Apartment in a New City:
You’re probably a junior, rising senior. You were probably applying for internships all of spring semester, trying desperately not to live at home. AND YOU GOT ONE! Good for you!! You’re adventurous because you’re willing to move to a new city for a summer with no family and not too many friends. You’re also pretty outgoing because you’re gonna have to make new friends in this new city or else your summer is going to be pretty lonely. Get ready for an adventure!!
Living in a House with Extended Family in a Non-Hometown City:
You’re probably a sophomore, rising junior. You want to strike out on your own but not be totally by yourself. You want familial support or at least a home-y atmosphere this summer while you’re interning or working at the DQ near your aunt. Whatever it may be, you didn’t want to go home and just lounge this summer; you wanted to do something, whether it is getting experience or saving money because you don’t have to pay rent. You’re probably adorably excited to do whatever you are doing and I wish you the very best!!!
USC
USC Housing:
Let’s be real. You’re probably taking summer school classes or your parents wanted you to live there. It’s eerily quiet over there summer and its definitely not as social, so you’re gonna ahead to put forth a little more effort. But that’s you! You have to be outgoing or like hosting get togethers in your room. Everything is provided; you don’t need to get a mattress or anything. It’s easily to move in and out of, which is a good thing because you’re probably busy. It’s not the cheapest option but you’re the type of person to pay a little more in everyday life to get convenience, i.e. getting Domino’s delivered instead of walking to pick it up.
Apartment or Housing around USC:
You were possibly pressured to take over a friend’s lease or you couldn’t get your lease taken care over so you’re kinda stuck here. You probably have an internship somewhere like Santa Monica or Downtown. You want to feel like an adult, like a real adult by buying groceries and actually making food in your apartment/house. You’re a little more quiet and aren’t expecting to have too many apartment parties this summer and expect your neighbors to share the same sentiment.
Fraternity:
Odds are you a sorority girl or a member of that frat. You might have an internship, you might be a recent graduate trying to find a job, or you just might not want to go home for the summer so you chose the cheapest option. You have to provide most things when you move into a fraternity but you can make it as nice as you want. You’re expecting this summer to have a decent social life, not as big as during the school year but you want to make friends and getting a social atmosphere was the most important part of your summer.
Wherever you are this summer, you’re still awesome because you’re a Trojan. Stay safe and we’ll tell you more about fall housing stereotypes when the times comes.
Fight on!
