Women’s History Month:

By Ela Rybak

Happy March and Happy Women’s History Month! With spring just around the corner, there’s no better time to celebrate the incredible contributions of women. Interestingly, Women’s History Month began right here in California in 1978. In Santa Rosa, Northern California, it started as a week-long celebration, with March 8th designated as International Women’s Day. It was officially recognized in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter. Decades later, the tradition continues, and the theme for Women's History Month 2025 is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”

With USC-specific and more broad Los Angeles events, there are many different ways to celebrate women this March!

1.USC FemFest:

Consider enjoying amazing music and food in an inclusive safe space on March 29th at USC Student Assembly for Gender Empowerment’s annual FemFest! Shining a light on those marginalized by the patriarchy in the music industry, FemFest is rooted in intersectionality. Open to all, the festival specifically amplifies the voices of women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Each year this festival continues to grow with more and more students opting to help make the festival a success. Additionally, with different fundraising events like drag bingo at Hamburger Mary’s leading up to this event in March, there are many ways to get involved!

2. USC Women’s Basketball and More:

USC’s women athletes continue to shine at the highest level! With the USC Women’s Basketball team currently ranked 4th nationally and 2nd in the Big Ten, excitement around women’s sports is at an all-time high—especially with Juju Watkins continuing to raise the bar in basketball. The team has two major tournaments coming up, so even if you can’t attend in person, consider hosting a watch party with friends! Beyond basketball, USC’s women’s track, volleyball, water polo, and more have key home games this March, so Trojans should show up and cheer them on!

3. LA Women’s March:

On March 8th, International Women’s Day, Downtown will host the annual International Women’s Day Protest & Rally, which is a powerful opportunity to come together, connect, and make our voices heard. This is our day to stand strong, support one another, and show the world that we’re moving forward, not backward. Women’s rights matter, and together, we’re making a difference!

4. LA Virginia Robinson Gardens:

In the beautiful city of Beverly Hills sits the Virginia Robinson Gardens, once home to Virginia Robinson, a prominent philanthropist and social figure with a deep passion for nature and community—reflected in the estate’s stunning gardens. With tennis courts, a museum, and scenic nature walks, this hidden gem offers students discounted admission for just $11. It’s a wonderful way to appreciate both history and the contributions of women!

With these four different activities, and many more yet to be announced, there are countless ways to celebrate Women’s History Month in 2025 here at USC and throughout Los Angeles! Whether you’re attending inspiring events, supporting women-led initiatives, or simply learning more about the incredible contributions of women, this month is filled with opportunities to engage, honor, and uplift one another.
