Black History Month Spotlights: Five to Watch
By: Haley Coleman ‘18
Talented. Leaders. The future. These three words best describe five students at the undergraduate and graduate level, are following the footsteps of many prominent alumni within their major fields. In celebration of 40 years of The Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs (CBCSA), we honor five black alumni who have served as great leaders within the community and have paved the way for amazing students coming after them. This is Black History Month parallel.
Not East Nor West: On Asian-American Body Image
By: Judy Lee ‘17
It’s been a few days since Chinese (Lunar) New Year, and aside from all the festivities and vibrant cultural hallmarks, it has given me some time to reflect on my roots. I have no qualms about discussing (in great detail!) the amount of pride I have in being Asian-American. It is a source of strength and beauty I have grown to love more and more with age, but that’s not to say it is without its repercussions…
How do you like them ashes?
By: Grace Carballo ‘17
Today is Ash Wednesday so if you see someone walking around campus with what appears to be dirt on their forehead, don’t wipe it off for them! It’s actually ashes, obtained from burned palms from last year’s Palm Sunday.
Credits
By: Grace Carballo ‘17
I first heard about Credits, a web series from Alex Burns and Alexandra Kyllingstad while I was abroad in Nicaragua this fall. I watched the trailer and then the season premiere on December 6th and was excited to see several familiar faces from around campus putting together a funny series about the nitty gritty realities of film school.
Style Guru: Lauren Black
By: Samantha Romero ‘16
I’ve always known what I’ve wanted to do—become a fashion editor. My love of fashion came from reading stacks and stacks of magazines when I was young, and that turned into following blogs and editorial websites as the industry expanded. More so than reading, though, I’ve also loved writing. So I actually started off as a Print and Digital Journalism major but felt that studying PR would give me better access to the kinds of fashion opportunities that exist in Los Angeles, and it definitely has…

What I Learned from an Evening with Shonda Rhimes
By: Felicia Zhu ‘17
Last Monday on November 16, 2015, Shonda Rhimes came to USC and spoke about her book Year of Yes. Her book describes how she changed her life for the better by saying yes to opportunities that she would normally turn down. Here’s what I learned from her at the Q&A.
Transgender Day of Remembrance
By: Grace Carballo ‘17
November 20th is International Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender prejudice or hatred. And tragically, there are many victims to remember; according to TDoR’s founder, Gwendolyn Ann Smith, every two weeks, on average, someone is murdered in the United States in an act of anti-transgender violence and internationally, these killings occur almost daily.
Stop What You Are Doing and Register for USC President Nikias’s Class this Spring
By: Emily Young MA ’16
If I were a freshman or sophomore, the top class I would have on my registration list is USC President Nikias’s class “The Culture of the Athenian Democracy” (CORE 200). Almost anything can be tied back to the ancient Greeks in some manner: democracy, personal freedom, debate, rhetoric, fine art, architecture, the Olympics, even common sayings. Studying the classics, Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Philoctetes, allows you to examine society today from a different lens. Do the ends always justify the means? Is there honor in lying to serve a nobler cause? Is heroism a struggle against fate? Not only will the readings lead to interesting discussions, the discussions will be lead by one of the greatest minds at USC, President Max Nikias.
“LGBTQ History Month” Ends, The True History Should Not
By: Paul Samaha ’17
I began this post as I embarked on the annual USC “Weekender”– a weekend-long trip where Trojans travel to the Bay Area for either the Stanford or UC Berkeley football game. This year we play Berkeley, and I’ll be staying in the heart of Downtown San Francisco: a beautiful metropolis in Northern California filled with free spirits and views of the sparkling San Francisco Bay. This same city is also where my past LGBTQ community members shed their blood, sweat, tears and in the worst case, their lives for the sake of basic human rights. Let’s dive in.
