A Trojan’s Guide to Black History Month

Ellice Ellis ‘20

Every February we celebrate Black History Month, and recognize the achievements by black Americans and their role in US history. And now, thanks to USC’s Black Student Assembly (BSA), you don’t have to wonder about all the events set up to help everyone celebrate and learn more about Black History.

Here are five of the coolest events featured on the BSA’s calendar for Black History Month:

1. Monday February 13th, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will be hosting a Black History Month Debate located in GFS 101 from 6pm to 7pm. If you’re interested in more NSBE events follow them on Instagram at @nsbe_usc

2. Join the CBCSA at Tommy’s Place on Wednesday February 15th at 7:00PM for some Black History Month Trivia or come out to Real Talk Tuesdays, every Tuesday from 11:30 am to 1pm in the CBCSA (STU) 415) to discuss current events.

3. Come out to Gearfest, a music festival hosted by USC’s BSA and CREEX. The free music festival will take place on Saturday February 18th on McCarthy Quad. Starting at 4pm (doors open at 3:45) the festival is open to all USC students; all non-USC guests must have a state ID.  Come celebrate black excellence with ethnic food trucks, black-owned businesses, and local & student performing artists! Visit https://bsacreex.wixsite.com/gearfest for more info or contact Jazmyn Breanna: BSA Co-Director Of Creative Experience & Gearfest Producer at 714.380.1590 / bsacreex@usc.edu

4. Join USC’s Black Actors Union on Saturday February 25th from 12pm to 3pm for a screening of the Oscar-nominated movie Hidden Figures. Learn the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson; the brilliant African-American women who worked at NASA. The location of the screening is TBD.

5. On Wednesday February 22nd join USC’s Marshall School of Business and the Black Graduate Business Leaders for a panel on Diversity in Hollywood. Come out to Popovich Hall at 6pm to discuss diversity and the future of the entertainment industry with the next generation of entertainment leaders.
