Festival of Books @ USC

By: Lilly Kate Diaz ‘20

It’s that time of year again!

FESTIVAL OF BOOKS SEASON!

If you’re a book lover like me, you probably get maybe a little too excited about books.

About The Festival

Here’s some basic info for those who haven’t heard or know much about FOB. The Los Angeles Festival of Books was created in 1996. This event brings together the people who create books with the people who love to read them. It has been held at USC every year with over 150,000 people coming each year! The dates for it this year will be: April 21st-April 22nd

Authors & Performers

This event is so awesome that there are conversations between speakers on several topics and books! All of these conversations are free, but you have to get a ticket before going. There will be Advance Conversation tickets ($1 service fee) available, too. Check out here for more info on tickets!

Some of these authors and performers include:

  • Junot Díaz

  • Jenna Fischer

  • Gabrielle Union

  • Hiram Sims (USC Alumni)

  • Karen Tongson (USC FACULTY!)

  • Viet Thanh Nguyen (USC FACULTY)

  • Ngugi wa Thiong’o

  • Leslie Odom, Jr. (AARON BURR, SIR)

  • Sierra Santana

  • Emily Carroll

  • Student Speakers from March of Our Lives

Sponsors/Exhibitors

The books you’ll be dying to buy will be in great supply (fingers crossed)! There will be a huge range from children’s books to the greatest literature created. My personal favorites are: $5.00 or Less Books (they sell all genres!), Anomaly Productions (for those that like comics!), and California LGBTQ Authors (for my fellow queers and allies!). Every year that I have gone, I have been able to find great books at cheap prices!

Some of these exhibitions have free stuff to give away and who doesn’t like free stuff? You can anticipate that I’ll be there spending $$$ on books and getting free stuff.

AND DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE GREAT FOOD THAT’LL BE THERE.

Festival of Books After Dark

I don’t know if it’s just that I never really look thoroughly through the FOB website, but FOB after dark sounds pretty….. COOL. Go check it out if you’re interested in these late afternoon shows and events.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a book lover, a free stuff lover, or just plain curious about what goes down at the Festival of Books @ USC – come on down! There’s bound to be great music to listen to, epic books to buy, and awesome speakers/performers to hear from!

And to end this post, I end with a quote by W. Faulkner: Read, read, read. Read everything – trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read!
