Graduation Feels: An Underclassman’s Perspective

By Maddie Walsh ‘20

The end of the year can be a stressful and emotional time for everyone, but the second you realize your beloved senior friends are graduating it turns into a full blown emotional rollercoaster. Like me, you’ve probably been living in denial since August, pushing thoughts of them in graduation caps out of your mind in an attempt to make the most of the time you have left together. However, with just a few weeks left until graduation, it is time to face the facts. Here’s everything you can expect to feel in the weeks leading up to their Big Day:

1. Sentimental
You have lots of great memories together! That’s why your friends. They’ve been there for you in moments of underclassmen naiveté and supported you through these last few semesters. Don’t be afraid to reminisce. Better yet– take time to reminisce together and let them know how much those good times meant to you!

2. Sad
Unfortunately, this is unavoidable. It’s hard not to dread what it’s going to be like without them around, but have some faith in your friendship! You’ll be able to stay in touch with social media, and let’s be honest– they’ll probably come back for Gamedays.

3. Jealous

The graduation hype and stress from finals can make being done with college seem like the best thing ever. It’s going to be fun, of course, but don’t rush through your college years! The undergraduate experience is full of good times and personal growth, so don’t let the jealousy keep you from appreciating your time at USC.

4. Proud
You know how hard your friends have worked to get to this point and the pride of seeing them onstage will definitely have you screaming like proud parent. Who doesn’t love watching friends achieve their goals?

5. Grateful
Hopefully, this is the overwhelming emotion you experience while prepping for graduation. Personally, I have been blessed with a number of amazing senior friends who mean a lot to me, and while it’s very bittersweet to see them starting a new chapter in their lives, I am just grateful to have had them be a part of my USC experience. I am confident that we will stay in touch and I can’t wait to see where they go next!
