Holiday Wish List For Studying Abroad

By Judy Lee ‘17

If you’re studying abroad, you’ve got to be strategic this holiday season!  Here are some things you can keep in mind in case someone asks you what you’d like this year:

Universal Plug Adapter

A universal adapter is a MUST and is often overlooked by many. Although it is generally recommended that you buy one once you get to the country since they’ll have an accurate voltage level, there are several reliable ones on Amazon you can check out. Remember to go with the better reviews, not the better price. If the voltage levels are off, you risk damage to the items you plugged in.

Duffel Bag

Very important for weekend trips! Also a very useful carry on bag. Try to get one with a smaller pocket for valuables. Bonus points if it has a hidden pocket.

Noise Cancelling headphones

For the airplane trip to and from, these are great for naps and general good vibes if you want to play your own music. This is also great for audiobooks.

Diary/Journal

Optional, but a great thing to have to document your adventures!

Appropriate clothes

This sounds standard, but REALLY do your research because you never know if the reputation will precede the actual weather. You don’t want to show up with 4 pairs of rain boots if you don’t have to (also, you shouldn’t have to show up with 4 pairs of rain boots ever).

Passport case for all legal documents

Sounds frivolous, but it’s really nice having one place for all your important documents so you are rifling around your bag every time you run into customs.

Books

Again, for the long plane ride. Also a great way to know people! Ask those you love for their favorite books and you’ll have a window into their personalities based on what they give you.

Packing Cubes

These may seem random and unnecessary, but packing cubes are apparently the lifesavers of more than one avid traveler. They’re great for categorizing your luggage so you aren’t constantly digging for your clothes. With the cubes, you know that all your toiletries can be in one place while all your jeans are in another.
