Kickstart Your Creativity for the Spring Semester

By: Ellice Ellis ‘20

Famous Maltese theorist Edward de Bono once said: “Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way."

Its January 2020, the start of a new year and new decade, meaning a great time to try something new and jumpstart new habits, patterns, and goals.

For myself, writing is my creative outlet of choice. I love expressing my opinion and telling stories with my words and encourage others to do the same. In the spirit of creativity, whatever medium you chose, here are some clubs, opportunities, and organizations to join this semester.

Daily Trojan

The Daily Trojan, USC’s student-operated newspaper, is always looking for new writers, photographers, graphic designers, and columnists at the start of each semester. Here is the general application for the paper: http://dailytrojan.com/apply/

California African American Museum (CAAM)

Visit CAAM for their 2020 MLK Day Celebration. From 10 am to 3 pm on January 20th,  the museum will have family-friendly art-making activities, including bookmark making! Get more info here

Love Sneakers? In celebration of Run-DMC’s “My Adidas” single, the museum will have am opportunity for visitors to draw their own sneaker design. Head to CAAM on Saturday, January 25, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Music Inspiring Community

Do you love working with kids? And getting your hands down in dirty in the spirit of creativity? Check out USC’s Music Inspiring Community! The group teaches elementary school students basic music concepts through games, and no prior experience is required. Their Spring 2020 info session is Tuesday, January 21, at 8:00 PM. Check out their website here

The Sack of Troy

We all think we’re Tiffany Haddish or Seth Meyers funny, and even if you’re not, The Sack of Troy can help you beef up your comedic appeal. The Sack of Troy is an online satirical publication whose staff members collaborate on articles, columns, graphic design, and videos that satirize local and global current events. This is an excellent opportunity to combine journalism, comedy, and creativity. Check out their application here

Ground Zero

USC’s beloved performance cafe, and now-defunct milkshake haven, is hosting Late Night ‘SC’s Paint Night on January 25th at 8 pm. All materials will be provided and spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. RSVP on Facebook here
