On the Lookout for Adventure

Adventure is all around us, you just have to watch….TV?  Yes, my most recent adventure destination came from a television episode of the new series “Lucifer” on Fox which is filmed in Southern California. During the episode, the main character Lucifer interrupts this couple that was about to get married in beautiful glass covered chapel overlooking the ocean, pictured above.  Curious, I Googled, “glass church by the ocean in Southern California.” Wayfarers Chapel, Rancho Palos Verdes.

I selected a day when I had free time, put in the GPS location of Wayfarer Chapel and took a road trip. Located south of Los Angeles on a winding road overlooking the ocean, I arrived shocked that it was more breath taking then on TV. I pulled into the Chapel entrance drove up a hill and into a parking space.  Once outside I observed the Wayfarer visitor center and gift shop.  Located further up the hill nestled in between towering Redwood trees was the Wayfarer Chapel.

I did not go inside the chapel right away; I first walked around the outside of the chapel taking in the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The landscaping was magnificent with colorful flowers, manicured lawns, luscious vegetation, water fountains and a canopy of trees. The Wayfarer Chapel was surrounded by glass panels so that you could see inside the entire chapel. Walking inside the chapel I felt a great sense of peace and serenity because of the tranquil environment.

While inside I learned that Wayfarer Chapel was designed by Lloyd Wright Jr. the son of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and was built in 1951.  He was an American landscape architect active primarily in Los Angeles and Southern California.  Other than Wayfarer Chapel one his more notable works was designing the second and third band shells at the Hollywood Bowl.

Wayfarer Chapel is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.  Additional information can be found at www.Wayfarerschapel.org or by calling (310) 377-1650.  It’s definitely worth the visit!
