As a journalism major and a citizen who likes to stay informed, I’m one of the first people to rush to its defense when both the government and the public criticize media. Like it or not, journalists do hard work that should be valued as both an art and a technical skill. I don’t think it was until I came to USC and got involved in my passion for reporting and writing that I realized how important news media is. That is not to say, however, that the industry (like all other industries) doesn’t have flaws. In this blog post I want to touch on journalism’s merits, its history, and maybe help give you a less negative perception of media.

With the help of technology and media industry sponsors, including Facebook and Qualcomm, the undergraduate student organization Hack SC Jr managed to host two hackathons reaching over 300 California students, many coming from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in technology.

On Sunday, April 2, the Women in Cinematic Arts hosted its first ever Feminist Media Festival. Although this was an inaugural event, the organization hopes to host more festivals in future years to improve inclusivity and diversity within an industry predominantly represented by cisgender white men. The USC School of Cinematic Arts is diverse in its student demographics — the school’s demographics reveal that it is 50% female. Unfortunately, the film industry does not reflect these numbers, as only 3% of women direct the top films of the field. Such events like the Feminist Media Festival aim to create and build a network of feminist filmmakers to pave the way for the film future.

Last Friday, I met some amazing and inspiring peers at the Diversity Networking Mixer at SCA through several rounds of “speed dating.” The event was hosted by Acción Latina, USC WCA (Women of Cinematic Arts), African American Cinema Society, the Asian American Cinema Association, and Queer Cut, the School of Cinematic Arts’ diversity organizations.

So you’ve probably heard a lot about “resolutions” over the past few weeks– from the diversity climate resolution to the college affordability and tuition transparency resolution, there has been a lot of talk, hype and speculation about what these resolutions are, and what they can do. There has also been some rumors and misconceptions on what exactly happens when and if a resolution is passed within the Undergraduate Student Government Legislative Branch (USG Senate).
