Making Waves and Webpages: Hack SC Jr
By: Joy Ofodu ‘18
With the help of technology and media industry sponsors, including Facebook and Qualcomm, the undergraduate student organization Hack SC Jr managed to host two hackathons reaching over 300 California students, many coming from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in technology.
USC Students like Computer Engineering & Computer Science major Kourtney Chima (pictured above) volunteer their time to secure event space for hackathons, advocate to the university and community, perform outreach to tech companies, teach coding lessons and assist with equipment.
Her organization, partnered with Viterbi Center for Engineering Diversity and VAST will host another hackathon on March 31st in an effort to reach more kids from around the local USC community. Hack SC Jr is LA’s first annual pre-college hackathon held at the University of Southern California.
Over 53% of Hack SC Jr’s participants had their first introduction to coding and computer science at a Hack SC Jr event, and a record 60% of registered student participants identify as female.
