What Homecoming Week is Really Like
By Kelly Kinas ‘16
The University of Arizona has no idea what’s coming to them. The week of November 2nd-November 7th and I hope you all are ready for what is going to happen. A lot of new students don’t really what Homecoming week consists of and I am here to help you out!
1. This is NOT high school
Unfortunately, this is not high school. Or fortunately, depending on the way you look at it. Don’t expect the same kind of activities you had in high school because there isn’t any kind of overarching department that is going to make the students do anything. There are optional events, like float building, but they’re usually reserved for large organizations on campus to compete in, like USG, Trojan Knights, and the overall Greek system. The big thing is the Homecoming Carnival on Thursday at 8pm (but don’t expect anything like in Grease).
2. There is NO DANCE
We get the football game, which is kind of like every other home football game. Luckily for Homecoming, there are more student oriented tailgating opportunities and a lot of alumni come back for this game. The band lets any alumni perform in the half time show. You’ve matriculated into college. You get football over dances. Yay?
3. There are NO AWKWARD PROPOSALS
Pairing up happens in the Greek system but that’s because the Panhellenic and IFC greek councils feel the need to pair up for everything. For everyone else, there is no one to ask in a public setting if they want to go to the dance with you. You can ask someone to the football game in a large public way if that’s your prerogative. But nothing is mandatory about it and you can just hang out in your room if you want to!
4. It is like a lot of other weeks in the Fall Semester…
There are always fun things happening around USC and the Administration will work to have more Homecoming themed activities throughout the week to build momentum towards the game.
5. …But the networking with alumni makes it worth it
Everything is pretty much around the game and meeting all the alumni and past Trojans. You will have endless opportunities to meet your predecessors and that is the coolest part about being a Trojan in general. All of the alumni want to meet current students and throughout the entire tailgating process before the 7:30pm start, you can talk with them and really connect.
Luckily, this year, Undergraduate Student Government is putting on a USC Homecoming Carnival and Parade!
There are events throughout the week with it all leading up to the Carnival on Thursday, November 5th at 8pm and the Football game against the University of Arizona Wildcats at 7:30pm on Saturday, November 7th.
The carnival itself will have a lot of fun booths (detailed below) and we should all go support USG.
Check out your specific school’s (Marshall, Annenberg, Viterbi, etc) and they have more related events throughout the week.
Get excited and get ready for a great homecoming game!!
Fight on!
