What is the Trojan Family?
By Kelly Kinas ‘17
From the first time you step on campus at USC, you start hearing about the “Trojan Family”. You don’t really question it. It sounds good and could be beneficial for you so that’s chill. But what really is the Trojan Family? We’re a part of it but what is it?
Well, I’m here to help to educate everyone. Let’s go!!
The Trojan Family is….
THE CURRENT STUDENTS
This is a little obvious. The Trojan Family is the people you are currently in school with, no matter the school, no matter the major. Every person at USC right now is a part of a Trojan Family because they are a current trojan. We all go through this campus, we have our amazing faculty, we support the athletic department, and we all go to one of the best universities in the world. We all have special talents that got us into this school and the relationship you make here will last you a lifetime.
THE ALUMNI
These people are the part of the reason that USC is the prestigious university it is today. The success of the alumni bring favorable attitudes towards the university and they are the ones who continue to support us through alumni groups around the country and the world. Once you get the pleasure of being a USC student, you get to join this exclusive club next. They are a part of Trojan Family because they are the ones who pave the way for the rest of us and are the USC students of the past. We sing the fight song with them on the way to the Coliseum. We talk to them about that professor that is STILL HERE. We share an affinity for Cardinal and Gold.
THE COMMUNITY
The Trojan family is the community surrounding USC, that we, as students, bring together. The community of Los Angeles is brought together through sports, charity events, and a shared sense of pride with the USC Trojans. We are a research university, ever striving for the best, and continuously and relentlessly trying to mold the most scholarly, faithful, ambitious, skillful, and courageous students and alumni in the world. We start by connecting with the community of Los Angeles.
IT’S MORE THAN JUST PEOPLE. IT’S A FEELING.
It’s something you hold in your heart. It’s a sense of belonging. It’s that overwhelming urge to fight on whenever you hear the fight song. It’s the random feeling as you walk around campus thinking, “This is beautiful. It is so cool that I get to learn here.”
The reason that the Trojan Family is so difficult to describe is because it is ever-changing and continuously growing through new students, new alumni, new fans. It protects it’s own. We support each other unfailingly. We might not always get along but we all have a shared set of values. It’s a Family.
Fight on!
