What to Do if You’re Spending Spring Break in LA

By: Alexis M Peters ‘20

So, home is too far away to justify buying a plane ticket back for only a week (or you just really don’t want to spend your break hanging out with your little brother), or your friends are all going on fun trips out of town that for whatever reason didn’t work out for you. You’re spending spring break in LA, and you have no idea what to do with your time that doesn’t include banging your head against the wall from absolute boredom.

Trust me, I get it. But there are loads of fun things you can do if you’re staying in town during spring break. As USC students, we’re a little desensitized to the glamour and glory of Los Angeles. City of Angels? Yeah, yeah. Been there, studied there. But remember, LA is actually a spring break destination for other students across the country. So, if you’re thinking there’s nothing to do: think again…

1. Hit the beach!

Santa Monica is only a quick train ride away, so slather up the sun screen, grab your shades, and head over to Santa Monica Beach to soak up some rays, splash in the surf, and check out all there is to offer on famous Santa Monica pier! They’ve got an amusement park with roller coasters and a ferris wheel and ridiculously yummy food options with oodles of restaurants to choose from. Or, instead of spending the whole day at the beach, you could tour Santa Monica by renting an electric scooter called a ‘Bird,’ to roll around the city and see it all! Either way, head over to the coast for some fun in the sun!

2. Get your hike on

Yes, you read that correctly. If you’ve been at USC for this long, and don’t know about the amazing nature trails LA has to offer, then you’ve been missing out. You can head over to Griffith Park and take the Burbank Peak trail. It’s 3 miles round trip, but at the very top, you get a spectacular view of LA from right behind the Hollywood sign!

3. Shake it on the dance floor

Not only does LA have a great nightlife scene with loads of different clubs for a fun night out, (there are lots of places for the under 21 crowd as well!) like Avalon Hollywood or OHM Nightclub, but also you could spend one evening of the break at the Troubadour– or any other LA music venue– listening to live performers and jamming to the beats!

4. Explore Hollywood

Go see the Hollywood Walk of Fame! It’s what nearly every visitor to LA comes to see, and even though you live here for school, chances are you haven’t been. So take this opportunity to be a tourist for a day: Take pictures with your favorite actor’s star, snag a ticket to be in the studio audience of a sitcom, or go shopping at the mall on Hollywood and Highland, and just enjoy a day out in the city.

5. Hang out at LA Live

LA Live is a premier entertainment venue that isn’t far from campus! It’s a short Uber ride away, or if you’re cheap like me, you can take a quick bus ride over instead. LA Live has some great restaurants, a movie theater and a bowling alley! And if bowling doesn’t really strike your fancy (Get it? Strike? Haha, anyway…) check out The Grammy Museum or head over to the Microsoft Theater for any number of live events. (On March 16th, the Microsoft Theater is having a comedy show with some of the best female comedians in the biz!)

I hope this gave you some ideas for fun times next week. Happy Spring Break!
