5 Second Hand Clothing Shops to Check out Near Campus
By: Awo Jama ‘22
As a first year college student living away from home for the first time, learning how to manage my money has proven to be one of the most difficult adjustments I’ve had to undergo. In order to have more funds available to me for Ubering, getting coffee, doing my laundry (yes, USC makes you pay for your laundry), stocking up on snacks, replenishing my toiletries, and going out with friends, I’ve had to greatly reduce the amount of money I spend on clothes. As a fashion enthusiast, this trade-off hasn’t been easy, and has led to a few impulsive H&M orders. However, after exploring some local second hand clothing stores and gradually incorporating the clothes I’ve found into my wardrobe, I’ve realized that you don’t have to compromise style for affordability when shopping for clothes. Below I’ve listed the best second hand shops I’ve been to near campus, so if you’re on a budget but needing to revamp your wardrobe, keep reading!
1.) Goodwill on South Figueroa
Just a short walk away from campus, this Goodwill has a great selection of both men and women’s clothes that are of good quality. It’s also easy to find both wardrobe staples and unique pieces!
2.) Berda Paradise Thrift Store
Located on Sunset Boulevard, this thrift shop carries a smaller, more curated selection of clothes and accessories than a chain thrift shop would. While this means that their prices aren’t as low across the board as some other thrift shops, Berda Paradise is still well worth the trip. You’ll be sure to find some one of a kind, truly vintage finds during your visit that for the most part look brand new. Plus, they have a $1 dollar rack that carries equally as good pieces.
3.) Council Thrift Shop on Pico Boulevard
Another chain thrift shop, this Council thrift shop on Pico has the small, intimate feel of Berda Paradise while boasting lower prices. In addition to selling clothing and accessories for every demographic, Council also carries a fair amount of home goods and even film cameras!
4.) Squaresville
Although this spot has considerably steeper prices than your standard Goodwill, Squaresville is well worth your visit. Not only do they have an impressive selection of both modern and vintage pieces, but they carry second hand designer items ranging from Christian Dior to Moschino at a fraction of their retail value.
5.) Crossroads Trading on Sunset Boulevard
This consignment store holds an impressive amount of pieces from mid-range brands such as Nike, Adidas, Forever 21, Zara, H&M, and others, for far cheaper than they would be in stores. Crossroads is perfect for finding an outfit for a special occasion such as a dinner or party, or simply for finding a pair of half-off Vans.
