DIY Room Decor

By: Claire Wong ‘23

During the quarantine, I spent a lot of time on Pinterest and Tik Tok getting artsy, but so many of these crafts had no use. I was trying to figure out a way to make those crafts practical and with the new school year, room decor is a perfect way to create a fun piece but also destress through creativity. Here are three unique DIY room decor ideas to add to your room this school year:

1. Plant Wall

Plants are a great way to bring life to your room. My roommate and I have a bunch of Trader Joes plants but wanted to also add some “life” to our wall as well. All you need is:

  • Test tubes or containers to put the plants in

  • A leafy plant

  • Command strips

  • Water

Cut your plant leaves off at the bottom of the stem (we used a Pothos plant) and place inside a test tube. Then, fill the test tube halfway with water. Cut the command strip in half and attach one half to the back of the test tube and one half to the wall. Hang the test tube on the wall and that’s it! Repeat as many times as you want!

2. Hanging Grid Organzier

Recently, I have been seeing a lot of grid wall organizers used as decor. I found my old locker shelf from high school and made my own! All you need is:

  • Wire locker shelf

  • Pliers

  • Clear command hooks

  • Spray paint (optional)

Take the flat shelf off of the locker shelf and use the pliers to remove the metal connectors from each of the corners. Then, if you want to change the color, spray paint the shelf and let dry. Hang two command hooks on your wall, hang the shelf onto the command hook, and now you have a grid wall organizer!

3. Posters

I love posters and prints but did not want to pay $20+ for a decent print. This DIY is not so much as a DIY but more so a “hack” in how to get super super cheap prints!

  1. Google your favorite show, artist, or any image you want to print

  2. Click the “Images” tab

  3. Click the “Tools” option under the Google search bar

  4. Click the “Size” dropdown option and select “Large” (this will give your higher resolution images for print)

  5. Select any image you want to print and right click “Save Image” to save the image to your desktop

  6. Go to https://www.fedex.com/apps/printonline/#

  7. Select “Marketing Materials”

  8. Select “Get Started” under the Flyers option

  9. Upload your image and print posters for less than $1
