In Case You Missed It: Three Major Updates from this Weekend
By Emily Young MA ‘16
1. USC Annihilated Arizona State
USC Football won big against Arizona State this past Saturday,
42-14, putting the Trojans 1-0 in the PAC-12 South. Most notably, at
halftime we led 35-0, a showcase of defensive discipline and offensive
dominance. The next football game is Thursday,
October 8th in the Coliseum against Washington.
2. The Supermoon Lunar Eclipse
Sunday night there was a Supermoon Lunar Eclipse. (Watch
the video. Trust me, NASA does a much better job explaining it.)
If you missed it, it’s another 18 years until you will get a chance to see it again, but luckily USC student Stanley Cheng camped out on Mt. Soledad in San Diego to capture the photo above. (Much better than the photo on my iPhone).
3. Pope Francis ends his visit in the U.S. on a Sunday Mass Preaching Tolerance and Acceptance.
Pope Francis closed his multi-city U.S. trip Sunday with a mass before a
crowd of approximately 860,000 people. He preached a message urging the
church to practice unlimited inclusion and acceptance. In closing Francis said, “I leave you with a question, a question for each of you to answer: In
my own home, do we shout, or do we speak to each other in love and
tenderness? That’s a good way of measuring our love.”
In light of recent events sparking from USC student government president Rini Sampath’s speaking out on her first-hand experience of racism on campus, I believe the Pope’s message strikes home. We have to find the peace in our own home at USC through acceptance and tolerance before we can share it with the rest of the world. We are the Trojan Family and we choose to speak to each other in love and tenderness.
