Introducing the New Marshall Handbook: By Students, For Students

by Kristen Adams ‘25

Attention all Marshall students! The Marshall Business Student Community (MBSC) has launched a comprehensive Marshall Handbook, a brand-new resource curated to enrich your Marshall experience.

What’s Inside the Handbook?

Who better to understand the needs and questions of an undergraduate student than a fellow student? The Marshall Handbook is a guide written for students, by students: the handbook ensures that every Marshall student has access to the collective wisdom of their peers.

With topics ranging from academics to life on campus, the handbook is organized into multiple sections:

  1. General Tips: Deep dive into MyMarshall accounts

  2. Marshall Map: Explore Fertitta Hall

  3. Student Life: Academics, business attire, and an overview of what life is like as a Marshall student

  4. Academics: Understand class registration procedures, professors, and the Marshall Curve

  5. Resources: Professional guides on personal finance and well-being

Inside the Handbook: A Glimpse into “Student Life”

One of the sections of the Marshall Handbook is “Student Life.” Here is a sneak peek inside:

Academic Life:

Being a college student, especially at Marshall, involves a significant transition from high school.

  • Plan your time: set aside hours for study, and outline your academic and personal goals each semester.

  • Read and understand your syllabus for every class. Highlight exam dates and important deadlines.

  • Engage with professors, as they can help offer guidance for your future career.

  • Utilize resources: attend office hours, participate in Marshall study sessions, and check out popular study spaces like the Hoose Library of Philosophy and Leavey Library.

  • Study smart: form a study group or study alone, and use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique to enhance focus.

Professional and Career Development

Marshall and Leventhal undergraduates have access to a dedicated team of career professionals.

  • The Marshall Undergraduate Career Services offers one-on-one advising, workshops, career fairs, and more. They can also help with professional attire and headshots.

  • Handshake is Marshall’s online career platform. Sign in with your USC email to access resources like career advisor appointments and internship postings.

  • The USC Career Center offers comprehensive career support on a platform called connectSC, where you can access on-campus recruiting and additional resources and events.

  • Join clubs: being a part of a Marshall Recognized Student Organization (MRSO) can help you network, learn, and grow professionally.

Business Attire

Navigating the world of business attire can be confusing, but it is essential for making strong first impressions

  • Understanding attire types: whether it’s business casual or business formal, knowing what to wear and when can make all the difference.

  • The handbook provides a visual guide to help understand each type of attire so you always look the part.

  • The Success Suits YOU program is open to sophomores, junior, and seniors, awarding selected students with business professional attire.

This is just the tip of the iceberg: keep reading for more insights and tips on how to enhance your experience at Marshall.

Access the Marshall Handbook here, or through MBSC’s website.

About MBSC

MBSC is not just another student organization. It is a community that highlights the diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences of every undergraduate Marshall student. They strive to serve as a bridge between administration and students, crafting enriching programs that prepare tomorrow’s business leaders. In other words, MBSC creates relationships among students, faculty, staff, and alumni to foster an inclusive and resourceful community. This handbook is an example of this commitment: it aims to simplify the transition to university life for both incoming first-year and transfer students. Think of the Marshall Handbook as your one-stop shop for all things Marshall.
