LGBTQ+ History Month at USC

By Ela Rybak

LGBTQ+ History Month takes place throughout the month of October and has become an integral part of the USC community for more than fifty years. The origins of this celebration date back to 1970, when a group of students and faculty established the Gay Liberation Forum. This initiative aimed to advocate for the rights and recognition of LGBTQ+ individuals. After years of dedicated activism and perseverance, the movement achieved a significant milestone in 1975 when it was officially recognized by the USC Board of Trustees. This acknowledgment marked a pivotal moment in the university’s history, solidifying the importance of LGBTQ+ issues within the campus community.

Numerous advocates and members of the USC community persisted in their efforts to support LGBTQ+ Trojans, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Queer and Ally Student Assembly (QuASA) in 1985. This assembly was officially recognized as a cultural organization and has fostered a vibrant community for students. Fast forward to 2024, the assembly provides a diverse range of activities, from speed dating events to movie nights, aimed at continuing to strengthen the sense of belonging. Additionally, QuASA organizes an annual drag show that celebrates the culture and community of queer students at USC. This year's 14th annual event was themed "The Freak Show" and included several runway shows!

QuASA played a crucial role in establishing the LGBT Resource Center, now known as the LGBTQ+ Student Center, to cultivate a sense of belonging within student life. The center has made significant efforts to remain progressive, positioning USC as one of the top universities for LGBTQ+ community members. The LGBTQ+ Student Center provides numerous opportunities for involvement, including programs such as Queer Rising, a leadership retreat designed for underclassmen eager to make a difference in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as various volunteer opportunities within the Los Angeles area.

There are also many different affinity groups offered through the LGBTQ+ Student Center. Certain weekly gatherings focus on specific topics or interests, while other affinity spaces are tailored for particular intersectional communities and the individuals who identify with them. However, all LGBTQ+SC programs are inclusive and available to all students. During graduation season, the Lavender Celebration serves as a vibrant and meaningful tribute to the LGBTQ+ community within the campus. This annual event not only honors the achievements of LGBTQ+ students but also acknowledges the contributions of LGBTQ+ professionals associated with the institution. The celebration is filled with joy and pride, featuring speeches, performances, and an inclusive atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging and support. It provides a space for students to connect with one another, share their stories, and celebrate their unique journeys.

USC has released a comprehensive calendar of activities to honor LGBTQ+ History Month, inviting all Trojans to participate in the celebrations! Throughout the month, there are numerous opportunities to engage and commemorate this important occasion. From captivating art museum installations that showcase LGBTQ+ artistry and history to festive Halloween parties at the month’s end, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and reflect on the contributions and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. Be sure to check out the calendar and join in the festivities!
