By: Anna Lipscomb ‘19
Last Thursday (2/16), USC Vision & Voices took students to the East West Players in Little Tokyo to see a production of Free Outgoing. Based on a true incident that occurred in India, the play captures the unraveling lives of Deepa and her family after she is involved in a sex scandal that goes viral online. When it feels like the world is against them, Malini, the mother and head of the household, must make a decision to protect the family’s future.
Gender-Based Violence in Asian-American Communities

I was 10-years-old when I was first sexually harassed. I was at the grocery store with my parents. Normally, I stick by my parents, walking next to the cart, admiring the vast options of chips and cookies. However, at one point, my mom realized we had forgotten to grab the milk. Me, adventurous and trying to be as independent as a 10-year-old could be, offered to quickly go grab it. My mom was hesitant at first, but since the milk aisle was just a few aisles down, she let me go. It was only for a brief second, but as I leaned into the fridge to pick up the milk, I felt a hand on my butt. I turned around and a middle-aged man quickly walked past me. At first, I didn’t think much of it. Maybe I was taking up too much room in the empty aisle, maybe I was in the way, maybe it was my fault. When I walked back to my mom, there was a sinking feeling that was hard to describe at 10-years-old. Something didn’t sit right with me. I felt lost, I felt guilty, I felt violated. At 10-years-old.

Last semester, I had a realization: we are in a very rare situation in which we are in the midst of people who will shape the future of this world. Seems dramatic, right? Not so far-fetched, though. Our professors have already had huge parts in shaping entire industries . Is it really a surprise that we’ll join them in the ranks soon enough?
Finding Your Passion with Alexis Jones: Author, Activist and Founder of I Am That Girl
By: Lauren Brose ‘15
Alexis Jones is wearing fitted black jeans with tears at the knees, a loose black tank top and a pair of long necklaces. Her long brown hair bounces effortlessly as she walks over to a number of familiar faces sitting in the audience. Sharing the captivating story of how she found her passion, wrote a book, and founded I Am That Girl, Jones’ inspiration was first sparked at her alma mater, USC. Before she dove into the meat of her story, she first asked the audience a question:
A Conversation with #RealResults
By: Lauren Brose ‘15
Rini Sampath and Jordan Fowler are the first all-female running ticket in USC and Pac-12 history. Despite a discouraging remark from a fellow peer–– who expressed her concerns of having two female student leaders––Rini and Jordan have received an overwhelming amount of support from both men and women, Greek and non-Greek students alike. They’re also the most endorsed ticket in USC history, currently standing tall with 48. I had a chance to meet with them after their debate and discuss platform points, USG background, and how these two accomplished women came to become partners in crime this USG election.
Are You THAT GIRL?

Alexa Trujillo is a current junior studying business with a minor in web technologies and web applications. She has been involved in the Alumni Committee for USG, was a USC Song Girl last year and is an active member of Delta Gamma. Alexa, though beautiful inside and out, faces the same feelings of self-doubt that many girls experience throughout college and their entire lives. She has made it her goal to let go of that negative mindset and to start anew with a club that will empower girls at USC and help them find their inner strength and beauty.
