Tips and Tricks to College Fashion

By: Sydney Henry ‘24

I know we’re remote right now, but that shouldn’t stop us from looking good during our Zoom classes or for a quick pic on Instagram to add to your follower’s feed. But a key piece to looking “good” in college is your sense of style. Style or fashion in general can be confusing and frustrating for many. It can also be expensive and inconvenient because no one wants to drop bands on clothes or spend hours upon hours trying to pick an outfit. So here are some tips and tricks that you can apply to make your wardrobe stylish and convenient, while also not breaking the bank.

Before we get into the actual clothing tips and trips. Let’s talk about where to shop. Fast fashion is a lot of people’s go-tos for inexpensive clothes, that are also on trend. But, what are some other options?

1. Thrifting. I personally just started getting into thrifting. Some people may think, “Why would you ever want to wear someone’s hand-me down.” But, they would be surprised at how many gems they could find by thrifting. For example, the first time I went thrifting I found some really nice Levi’s for $10. A definite steal! Thrift stores offer such a wide variety of things, clothes, bags, shoes, maybe even jewelry. Just google “thrift store near me,” pick one that looks nice, and check it out to see what you could find.

2. Sewing your own clothes. This one is a lot more challenging and requires a lot more time and skill, so this isn’t a good option for many. But, sewing is a valuable skill to have and how much you can do with the skill may surprise you after you master it.

Now let’s get into the tips!

1. MATCHING SETS

Let’s be real, no one wants to deal with figuring out which shirt should go with which pants. So what’s the solution to this problem? Matching sets!

Matching sets are great for every and any scenario. A solid colored top matched with solid colored bottoms or a stylish athletic vibe are definitely my personal favorites.

Running late to class, but still wanna look good?

- Throw on a matching set similar to this one from Missguided and you’re good to go. There are many different colors to choose from.

Want to wear sweats, but don’t want to look haphazardly thrown together or like you just rolled out of bed?

- Try a matching Champion sweatshirt and sweatpants set.

Can’t forget about shoes. I love to pair my sets with all-white sneakers. They can get dirty fast, but the aesthetic they create is worth it.

2. DENIM ON DENIM

You can honestly never go wrong with denim. You can wear denim to class, dinner dates, parties (not during quarantine of course!), or anything else you can imagine.

PS: Don’t skip over the men’s section. Most of my favorites come from there.

Tying back to tip #1, matching denim shades is always the way to go.

- Dark-wash denim jeans, a dark-wash denim jacket, any solid colored shirt (white and black are my favorite), some neutral shoes (white is best in my opinion) and the outfit is complete. You could also switch out the jeans for a denim skirt or shorts.

Want something that could be dressed up a bit more?

- Try a denim dress or jumpsuit. One piece items are definitely in and it takes minutes to put the outfit together because it is basically almost complete. All you need to do is add some nice heels, boots, or loafers, a couple accessories; a bag, rings, or earrings. Those quick additions are sure to elevate the outfit and it took no time at all.

3. COLLEGE MERCH

College merch is an instant vibe if it’s styled right. It can sometimes be on the expensive side, but the right pieces could be a great investment and last for a long time. Make sure to catch a sale if you can!

How to style merch without it looking tacky or frumpy?

- When I think of college merch, I picture an oversized hoodie or sweatshirt or a regular t-shirt with a USC logo. Your best bet is a pair of blue jeans maybe with a couple rips in the knee area.

Important Note: Try to avoid the swallowing silhouette; meaning don’t pull the sweatshirt or hoodie down past your hips. Have it rest right at the top of your jeans, so it creates a flattering shape. Also considering pushing up the sleeves to your elbows. I think it goes well with the hands in pockets pose you might consider doing for Instagram.

4. ACCESSORIZE

Last but certainly not least add some accessories. Add a bag, a necklace, some rings, a hat, etc. to make the entire look come together. There are many places to find great accessories, without breaking the bank.

- Hats are a great way to bring a look together. A solid colored hat like black or white would go great with a matching set, especially if it has black or white already incorporated.

- Rings and statement earrings are a personal favorite of mine. They are a positive addition to any outfit and they catch people’s attention a lot more than you might think.

P.S. To avoid your jewelry from turning too quickly coat it in some clear nail polish and let it dry before wearing.

- Backpacks are the obvious go to for the average college student. Herschel Supply Co. is a top brand for getting both an on-trend and affordable backpack. I personally always go for a dark colored backpack as it’s harder to see stains. But, Herschel has a wide variety of other colors to choose from.
