By: Emily Young MA ‘16
This week I choose to tackle the resume after attending an Annenberg Real World 101 Workshop on Building a Winning Resume and Cover Letter featuring Annenberg alumni Whitney Blaine. Whitney recently wrote a a book titled “Stop Doing What you Should” that explains some of the common misconceptions millennials purse in their career development. It’s hard to stay calm and focused when one test is worth 35% of your grade. It’s even worse when you have four tests and a paper due all in the next two weeks.

Work On It Wednesday: Writing Well
By: Emily Young MA ‘16
Writing college papers can be a daunting task: the amount of writing, the standard that teachers expect, the level of research behind it—and did I mention it’s due in a week. In high school, we wrote papers about our thoughts and feelings on book we read in class. Now that we are in college, we’re expected to use the book we read in class to stimulate a topic idea, research the topic more, and present unique arguments and critical thought. Not only is this style of writing new, but on top of that different professors may want different writing and citing structures that you might not be familiar with.
Work On It Wednesday: Career Fair Frequently Asked Questions
By: Emily Young MA ‘16
Career fair networking is different than an interview; it’s more like speed dating. Instead of a half an hour or hour for a typical interview, you have two minutes to break the ice and determine if you are interested in the company and if the company recruiter is interested in you. Luckily, company recruiters (who do this for a living) are friendly and genuinely want to get to know you. They’re not going to make hiring decisions on the spot, but leaving a lasting impression will help pave the way for later hiring interviews.
Presenting USC’s 123rd National Champions: Continuing a Trojan Tradition
By: Emily Young MA ‘16
One of the main aspects that drew me to University of Southern California was its history of athletic excellence. Since 1912, a USC athlete has won a gold medal in every summer Olympics. USC has produced more Olympians, overall medalists, and gold medalists than any other university in the United States. USC athletics is rich with tradition and it is displayed all around us: the pillars in the Louis Zamperini Plaza of Cromwell Track and Field, Heritage Hall, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and even Tommy Trojan himself was modeled after different USC Football players. There is pride, history, and distinction in putting on a USC jersey. That is why hoisting USC’s 123rd National Championship Ring is so meaningful—it’s tradition.

McCarthy Mondays

I hope that everyone had a fantastic first day of school. The first day of school can be a bit overwhelming: finding your classes, getting books, awkward new friend exchanges, etc.; but instead of my experience, I want to highlight Emily Hunter, who literally stole the show.
Summer Recap of Work On It Wednesday
By: Emily Young MA ‘16
I created Work On It Wednesday around the idea of taking time each week to invest in long-term career planning and building a personal image. During summer I found that it was easy to put my long-term career planning on the back burner when I didn’t have a set routine. Therefore, each Wednesday when I’ve posted tips, tricks, and advice to help improve your online image and achieve your career goals, I’ve been following them too.
