Hi, all! I hope classes are going well. And I hope you’re taking self care procedures to make sure your well-being is at its greatest. I figured that since I started my sophomore year at SC, I’d let the freshmen know what I learned as a freshman last year (hence the title). So, let’s get into it!

As the school year is rollin’ by, some of you might already be in need of some stress relief (like moi). And fortunately for USC students, we have some special companions that’ll be just the right being to help us. And yes – I’m talking about therapy dogs (or puppies, as I like to call all dogs).

I can probably spend hours, days, and even years (as I’m sure many other musicians and educators of jazz have spent) describing and defining what “Jazz” is. I found this really great clip and the people who are interviewed describe jazz and what it is to them (and its origins). All of their definitions, in my opinion, are correct!

Did you know that in the United States, April is Sexual Assault Awareness month? Spread awareness by participating on Denim Day (April 26th, 2017).

Bienvenidos! Here at El Centro, the goal is: “To empower Chicanx/Latinx students by providing a safe harbor to learn leadership, connecting to and exploring their cultural identity by being socially conscious critical thinkers, acquiring career advice through networking opportunities to help them achieve graduation from their respective programs in a timely manner, and offering transitional support beyond their USC academic life.” El Centro offers assistance to Latinx student groups. Programs within El Centro range from new student symposiums that help guide a “smooth” transition to USC life, to the annual Xicano/a and Latinx Graduation Celebration as a cultural and unique way to graduate from USC. Here are some ways to use El Centro as a resource:

For those that don’t know me, I am a huuuuuge lover of music. Ever since I was able to walk and talk, I have always had a love for singing, dancing, and playing instruments. I recall one day actually digesting the idea that I was finally a senior trombonist in my high school (this past spring) band. And when I received my letter to USC, I remember feeling stoked about joining the Trojan Marching Band (TMB) as a trombonist. And look where I am now – a freshman at USC and in the TMB.
