6 Places to Dine Outdoors Within Fryft Distance

By: Ngai Yeung ‘23

It’s safer to stay outdoors in the middle of a pandemic, especially during meals when everyone’s masks are off. Of course, students could always just eat at the Village, but that gets boring real quick. So here are a few places around campus — and within USC’s free Lyft boundaries — where you can eat outdoors with your friends.

1. Bacari West Adams

Don’t be fooled by the unassuming storefront — Bacari has a 20 table strong patio at the back, perfect for both small and large groups. The bar restaurant’s healthy Mediterranean and western mains cost $10 on average, but note the 3 percent charge that goes toward crew members’ health benefits. They take reservations by phone or on their website; a good idea especially on Friday and weekend nights.

2. Chick-fil A

One of the most popular fast food spots around campus! Their chicken sandwich and nuggets need no introduction. Not a lot of outdoor space here with just three tables at their storefront, four seats each. And though the seats may not always be filled, there is always going to be a line at the cashier.

Address: 3758 S Figueroa St | (213) 747-8721

3. Chipotle

Right next to Chick-fil-A is a modest Chipotle. At around 8 tables outdoors, it’s a bit more spacious than its popular neighbor, but not by much. Pro-tip: when you’re adding toppings, keep in mind the difference between the cheeses: free shredded cheese, and queso, which is Spanish for cheese, but in Chipotle refers to their special cheese sauce you must pay extra for.

4. Rosso Oro’s

Eat outdoors with your friend—singular—at one of USC hospitality’s least talked-about offerings. Outdoor seating is limited to two per table, and their pizzas and Italian fare is nothing spectacular, but prices are pretty affordable. Come on weekdays for lunch or dinner as the spot next to the USC Hotel is closed on weekends.

5. Study Hall

USC shut it down in 2019 with plans to redevelop it as student housing, but now Study Hall is back! Disguised as a house, the quaint restaurant and popular student hangout place is easy to miss on The Row. It’s still in the soft opening phase as of publishing time though, so visit only after 5pm and be prepared to stay for long on their patio tables and benches.

Address: 2827 S Hoover St | (213) 493-4363

6. Jacks N Joes

From hearty omelettes to buttermilk pancakes, Jacks N Joes has it all to satisfy your breakfast and brunch cravings. Prices are akin to USC Village at $10-$15 a dish, but the portions are generous, and you get to enjoy it leisurely (we hope) on their homely patio. Sadly—and naturally, for it is a breakfast place—the restaurant closes at 1:30pm every day, so students would not be able to Fryft here.
