7 Jobs Every Student Should Consider

By Anna Lipscomb ‘19

So, you’re back at school and suddenly find yourself spending more money than you actually have… Looks like it’s time to get a job! Whether you have work-study, or are just looking for some extra pocket money, here are seven positions you should take a look at…

1. USC ReadersPLUS

Good at math and reading? Enjoy working with kids? In the USC ReadersPLUS program, you will have the opportunity to tutor children in reading and math at the local schools. This is a part of Joint Education Project (JEP). If you reach a certain number of hours, you could also qualify for a $1,200 AmeriCorps scholarship! It will be a rewarding experience to bond with the children you’re working with and watch them grow in their learning.

2. Host/Hostess @ USC Cultural Relations and University Events

If you love events, this is the job for you! As a host or hostess, you will represent USC and help manage guests at various events on and off-campus such as Visions and Voices, football pre-games, and ceremonies.

3. Tour Guide/Admissions Ambassador @ USC Admissions Center

As a tour guide or admissions ambassador, you’ll be one of the faces of USC! You’ll get the chance to work directly with prospective students and their families by showing them the many opportunities and resources available to them at USC. Help build the next generation of Trojans!

4. Undergraduate Student Consultant @ USC American Language Institute

Some of best people on campus are our TAs. As an undergraduate Student Consultant (uSC) in the uSC/ITA program, you will have the opportunity to work with international TAs in the areas of teaching, language and culture as both a cultural ambassador and a language partner.

5. Research Assistant

Interested in conducting your own research someday? Want to work closely with experts in your field? Some research assistant positions pay if you have work study, and others allow you to apply for fellowships and stipends. You’ll be able to support professors in their research, learn a thing or two about the field, and who knows - maybe you’ll get to witness the next ground-breaking discovery of this decade.

6. Resident Assistant

Remember your freshman year? So many thoughts of excitement (and maybe concern) rushed through your head as you moved away from home for the first time. As a Residential Assistant (RA), you can be like a big brother or sister to the newest Trojans and guide them through their first year. Not only do you get free room/board, but you also get to be one of the first people who help Trojans get accustomed to their new home.
