Not in Trojanland Anymore: 4 Things I Miss About USC

By Judy Lee ‘17

I’m not going to lie—being abroad in London is already one of the most wonderful experiences of my entire life to date. However, there are things about this place that just isn’t…well, just isn’t USC. Here are several:

1.     The Sun

The sun rises at 8am and sets at 4pm here. And when it is up, it is often shielded by thick and gloomy clouds—peeking out every now and then. Being bundled up is very nice, but I miss running around in my t-shirt and gym shorts every now and again. I know, such a typical Californian thing to say.

2.     The Spirit

School spirit here isn’t as incredibly obnoxious as it is at SC—something I don’t consider a good thing. I miss being able to walk around and have people recognize that I go to a phenomenal institution is even more phenomenal peers. The vibrant culture of pride entrenched at USC is something truly special.

3.     The Smiles

Smiles (and eye contact) aren’t really a thing in London. Everyone is going from point A to point B and no one has time to stop and smile without it seeming like encroaching on someone else’s strict itinerary. While this doesn’t mean they’re unfriendly, I miss smiling at people on campus and having them smile back!

4.     The Isolation

I never considered that having an isolated campus dedicated to all things Trojan was such a blessing. Besides getting from UPC to HSC, walking was sufficient enough from getting from class to class. It has definitely spoiled me until now, when I have to take trains in order to get to classes on a different campus across the city.
