Club Spotlight at USC: SCAPE

By: Antonia Le ‘22

For students both newly arriving at USC or returning for another semester, finding a new organization to join can be overwhelming. On campus, tables used to line Trousdale as clubs competed for the attention of students just trying to get from one class to another. Over the course of the pandemic, the process of recruitment has shifted to Zoom meetings, where clubs not only had to compete with one another but also the feeling of Zoom fatigue.

One club that has made the most of the past few semesters is the Student Coalition for Asian Pacific Empowerment, also known as SCAPE.

Why You Should Check Out Trojan Talent

By: Jordan Bucknor ‘22

Short answer? To watch some films, listen to music, and check out art. Long answer? It’s a celebration of amazing student work: visual and auditory, scientific and creative — and it deserves more attention! I was pretty shocked when I checked out Trojan Talent for the first time for the sheer fact that there was just so much stuff! To top it off, everything on the site is phenomenal! This platform is a great way to explore the creations of your fellow students and honestly just keep yourself entertained. There’s too much content to tackle it all in one, or even two or three sittings — but even if it’s just a single short film or song, you should definitely check it out! After exploring all that Trojan Talent has to offer, you may even want to submit something yourself!

Recap: Women of Cinematic Arts Industry Panel w/ Sarah Gilman

By: Jordan Bucknor ‘22

One of the first clubs I signed up for as a freshman at USC, even before I officially began studying screenwriting, was Women of Cinematic Arts. As someone who did, and still does want to work in the film industry, I thought it’d be a great way to meet people with similar interest — and it is! In their own words, Women of Cinematic Arts is an “official alumnae organization of the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Since our founding in 2005, we have been dedicated to supporting women in film, television and digital industries by providing fellowship and professional development opportunities.” The organization hosts a variety of different events, from mixers to creative workshops, but a recent event that truly stood out was an industry panel featuring Sarah Gilman! Sarah Gilman, an actress known from series such as I Didn’t Do It (2014–2015) and Foursome (2016–Present), recently graduated from USC’s Film and Television Production program. Hosted by Women of Cinematic Arts, Gilman returned to campus for an intimate discussion about her experience balancing life as an actor and a student.

USC Style: Daily Campus Fashion

By: Karla Leung ‘22

When walking to class or wandering around campus, I quickly realized how unique the outfits and styles of USC students are; we have everything from Balenciaga sneakers to thrift store finds. Wanting to showcase what some of the more fashion-conscious people on campus wear, I walked around campus with a camera and a pad of paper on the hunt for my favorite outfits.

SC Spotlight: Dr. Heather Berg’s Gender Studies Classes and Research on Sex Work Advocacy

By: Sumaya Hussaini ‘22

The Gender Studies Department at USC is an interdisciplinary program that offers an intellectual environment, sense of community, and dynamic course load. The classes emphasize the importance of realizing the intersections gender has with other relations of power including race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, and religion. In honor of Women’s History Month, I wanted to recognize a professor in the Gender Studies Department who has inspired me and taught me so much in less than a year of being at USC. As gender studies minor, I’ve had the privilege of taking classes offered by Dr. Heather Berg, a professor and activist who does research that explores how workers navigate and resist capitalism and gendered oppression. She has a Ph.D. in Feminist Studies and teaches classes about feminist theory, gender and social justice, gender and creative labor, and my personal favorite, unruly women.

The New Feminism: STEMinism ft. Cool Women Scientists at USC!

By: Lindsey Hamilton ‘22

Challenge: name one woman scientist… other than Marie Curie. While Ms. Curie certainly earned her title as the quintessential female scientist with her discovery of radioactivity and the elements radium and polonium, she is just one small piece of the larger picture of women in science. Women have made invaluable contributions to science, despite many obstacles preventing them from succeeding in a field not historically welcoming to females. But times are quickly changing, spurred on by passionate, brave, intelligent women in all fields of research. It is therefore with great pride that I would like to feature some of these incredible women making big strides in the world of science right in our very own USC community.

By: Camila Grases ‘21

Not many people know what dragon boat is. I didn’t either before I tried out. Little freshman me was looking for a cool new sport to try out, and when I read the word “dragon”, I was sold. Now, I can’t imagine having done anything different.

Unconventional Grad Photos

By: Jamie Wu ‘18

Mudd Hall, Doheny Library, VKC arches are all great places to take graduation photos at USC. But how often do USC students actually spend the majority of their time at those places? We take an inside look into a student who chose the non-traditional path of graduation photos. When asked why she opted for these unique photos, Anna responded with: “I wanted to take graduation pictures that truly defined my last 4 years at USC. While taking the typical photos on traveler or popping champagne bottles are aesthetically pleasing, I wanted to capture my authentic USC experience. Taking these photos were exhilarating because people were staring at us and taking Snapchats the entire time, but we didn’t care at all. Life is so much more fun when you aren’t afraid to be yourself.” For photography, I personally believe that the best photos are the ones taken with no editing, no filters–just you and the camera. So naturally, when Anna and I combined our ideas this is what we got. We went around some of her favorite spots on campus to shoot for these authentic photos.
