USC Takes On The Disney Hall

By: Camila Grases ‘21

In celebration of one USC’s most distinguished professors, Dr. Morten Lauridsen, the USC Choral Artists and Symphonic Orchestra will be performing one of his major works, the Lux Aeterna, this Sunday, April 14th, in the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It will be an incredible send off to one of the most iconic composers of the choral world.

Who is Dr. Morten Lauridsen?

Dr. Lauridsen was born on February 27, 1943, in Washington State. He was accepted to USC and began his choral composition studies at what would become Thornton, writing his first composition for the USC Concert Choir. Since then, he has remained at USC essentially his entire life. He began teaching here since 1967 and has been here ever since. This is his last year.

Dr. Lauridsen is an immensely important choral figure. His work is famous and meaningful, and many of his songs contain a lovely, serene sense of melody. They are almost all about love and nature, exploring themes of wonder and romance.

He is the only choral composer ever to win a National Medal of Arts from the President in a White House ceremony “for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power, and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide.” (2007)

The Lux Aeterna itself, the piece that will be performed, has been nominated for a Grammy in the past. It is a reflective work, a requiem composed the year Dr. Lauridsen’s mother died. Each movement centers around different kinds of light, including light of hearts, blessed light, and the titular light eternal. It is truly a masterpiece worth the listen.

Can I Attend the Concert?

Absolutely! Tickets can be anywhere from $15-$46 when purchased through laphil.com. You can find more information here. The Disney Concert Hall is not far, so Lyft or Uber would be sufficient. There is also the option of taking the metro or driving (there is a parking lot across the street).

It is a great opportunity to support some of the most amazing musicians USC has to offer and to attend a concert in LA’s most important stage.
