It was November 25th, 2017 and the USC Women’s Volleyball team was against our blue and yellow crosstown rivals. This whole season, the valiant team lead USC into the Pac-12 conference with a score of 14-6. Earlier in the season, USC beat UCLA in a stunning 3-2 match on 9/21. Before the season’s final game at the Galen Center, USC ranked 13th with an overall score of 22-9.

However, after relentless digs and perfect passes, USC loss in a devastating 0-3 game. The first set resulted in 6 kills in the opening frame by Khalia Lanier but it wasn’t enough to beat the Bruin’s .222 hitting performance with 14 kills. The end score was 25-18. The second set resulted in 3 set points being called before UCLA‘s Reily Buechler stopped USC’s comeback with a kill. During the third set, USC led 21-19 but UCLA’s setter Sarah Sponcil earned a 23-22 lead for the Bruins on her kill of an overpass. Among USC’s top performing athletes was Sophomore outside hitter, Khalia Lanier with 27 kills on 52 swings. She also had 12 digs in addition to those hits. Despite a strong defense by the UCLA Bruins, her performance carried the team through the tough matches.

Despite the heavy loss, it was still a special day for the Women’s Volleyball team because it was seniors night. Brittany Abercrombie, Jordan Dunn, Danielle Geiger, Nikki Leonard, Reni Meyer-Whalley and Niki Withers are all graduating USC seniors. They’ve contributed so much to this amazing volleyball team and will continue to lead the girls as they finish strong in the PAC-12 championship.
