1-Unit and 2-Unit Courses to Take Next Spring

By: Hannah Skinner ‘23

Registration for spring courses has officially begun, so students are well into the process of preparing their schedules. If you want to take something fun or fill up your units, USC offers a variety of 1 and 2-unit courses that are worth trying. Read on for a list of courses that I have taken and heard good things about!

Taking 1-unit and 2-unit courses allows me to try new things, learn about a topic I am interested in, and helps me maximize my time at USC. There was only 1 semester at USC where I did not fill up my units, but part of me wished I had. So, here is a list of courses that I recommend you try taking next spring:

FSEM 100 (Writing to be Read)

This class is a 2-unit freshman seminar, so it is only available to first-year students. In the class, which meets once a week, students learn how to write and what to consider when writing for an audience. There is a different creative writing assignment each. It is taught by a published mystery author, and you receive wonderful feedback on your work and have engaging discussions each class. This was one of my favorite classes I have taken at USC.

PHED 120a (Yoga)

This is a 1-unit introduction to yoga, so no previous yoga experience is required. Students not only learn about the basic yoga poses and types of yoga, but also about the history of it. Even though the class only met twice a week, I could tell my flexibility, balance, and overall strength improved. I think one of the most beneficial aspects was learning about breathing techniques and the practice of meditation.

EALC 103a and 103b (Fundamental Chinese)

These 2-unit classes can be taken over two semesters to complete the equivalent of EALC 104 (Chinese 1). However, 103a is only offered in the fall and 103b is only offered in the spring. I still wanted to add them to the list because I took 103a and enjoyed it so much! If you have an interest in learning different languages, these classes will be perfect for you. They give an introduction to characters, pinyin, tones, and basic vocabulary and grammar. Class meets twice a week and has a very manageable workload.

PHED 148a (Archery)

I have not taken this class, but I know people who have and who loved it. If you want to try archery in real life instead of through Wii Sports, this class is the perfect opportunity for you! It meets once a week for 2 hours.

BPSI 414 (Pharmacoethics)

This 2-unit class is a great introduction to the field of biopharmaceuticals and the role of pharmacy within the medical and scientific communities. Gain access to the profound knowledge of the co-director of the undergraduate pharmacy program through this interdisciplinary course which combines the fields of science, medicine, communication, and literature.

This list is only limited to what I have taken and heard about, but there are many other 1 and 2-unit classes offered for arts, sports, languages, and sciences. I recommend spending some time on Web Reg to look through the courses and see if you discover anything that interest you!
